All nine of the dams on the Tennessee River are in spill operations to move water through the river system. Tributary reservoirs continue to store large volumes of water with more rain in the forecast. Norris, Watauga, and Blue Ridge continue to rise above summer levels. Norris is forecasted to reach 1023' and is currently sluicing. All nine dams on the Tennessee River are in spill operations with reservoirs near summer pool levels. Releases from Kentucky Dam, the last dam on the Tennessee River, is currently in flood control operations with the Army Corps of Engineers to reduce the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers' crest at Cairo, Ill. Our system of dams is instrumental during periods of excessive rainfall. Our tributary dams, such as Douglas, provide flood control and help our River Forecast Center engineers manage the river! Douglas was also built during World War II to assist the war effort. #TBT

Our skilled Power Service Shop Hydro Field team recently removed a 394,600-pound turbine at Melton Hill Dam! The original turbine was installed in the 1960s. The new turbine will serve the people of the Valley for years to come and increase our green power generation by 1.2 megawatts.

Construction began on Nickajack Dam and lock on the Tennessee River in 1964 and was completed in 1967. It replaced the old Hales Bar Dam, which was built by private interests in 1913 and had foundation issues. During the summer and fall, nearby caves also serve as habitats for gray bats! #TBT

You may have noticed the water level at Lake Nottely, located in North Georgia, is above normal for this time of year. This is because we just started maintenance work on the generating turbine at the dam, and we have to use the spillway to manage the water levels. The spillway is unique because it looks like a ski jump as water rushes over the edge into the river below. Forecasted heavy rainfall this week could result in higher spill rates as lake levels rise. #LakeNottely

Did you know the navigation lock at Kentucky Dam on the Tennessee River is one of the busiest on the inland waterway system? More than $5 billion worth of commodities moves through the lock every year. However, commercial barges and recreation boats sometimes have to wait up to seven hours to lock through. A new, larger lock is under construction by the Army Corps of Engineers, and when completed, it will significantly reduce the time it takes river traffic to lock through. As you can see, extensive excavation is currently underway due to the recent completion of the downstream cofferdam. The U.S. Coast Guard, Ouachita locks through Fort Loudoun Dam on the upper Tennessee River, heading to Knoxville. The crew performs maintenance or replaces the large red and green navigation buoys that mark the main navigation channel on the Tennessee River. In 1959, TVA completed the massive single-lift lock at Wilson Dam on the Tennessee River in Florence, Ala. It replaced the old and inadequate double-lift lockage system, which the Army Corps of Engineers completed in 1927. The single lift lock is the highest east of the Rocky Mountains, with a normal lift between 93 and 100 feet! The modified auxiliary lock reopened on Feb. 9, 1961. #TBT #WilsonDam #Alabama

Water is cascading through the spillway gates at Douglas Dam near Sevierville, TN, to add additional oxygen for downstream water quality on the French Broad River. The dam's generating turbines are also releasing water as we recover flood storage after heavy rainfall from the remnants of Tropical Storm Fred last week. Flows on the river below the dam are within normal limits.
