Last June, the US Army Corps of Engineers dredged the shipping canal at the foot by the
Robert C Byrd Locks to maintain clearance for a 9' draft. I've never seen dredging done down by Evansville, IN. I wonder if it is done only on the upper Ohio where the river is smaller. Or if I just haven't visited the locks in the Evansville area often enough to catch it.

At least two dredges were working the area.
The "business end" of the dredge. Judging from the size of the shaft, that is one of the bigger hydraulic motors that I have seen.
It appears they use a small barge with a tender to hold the head during transport.
I presume the boat in the background lays and picks up the pipes that carry the sediment to the other side of the river away from the shipping channel.
The USACE has subcontracted this dreging because one of Jeff's photos shows the name
Bill Holman, but that is not on
a list of USACE vessels. On the right is the logo on the dredge, but I don't know what company that is.
When they are done, they tie all the equipment together into a tow and head downstream to the next lock.
