Coal

There has been a burst of coal related links lately. So many that I haven't had time to read them. So I'm starting a reference post to save them. I suspect there will be more when Trump discovers that it is easier to say something than do it (make coal mining jobs).

I'm glad someone in North America has learned how to burn petcoke  Everything I've seen so far is that we ship it overseas to contaminate the skies of other countries.

Lots of "land scars" east and north of there. A coal mining museum is near Lynnville. Or is it now closed because it is not labelled on Google Map?

During the summer, fewer than 50 people were employed at Rosebud’s combined local operations: the Madison Mine in Jackson Township, Mine 78 in Paint Township and coal cleaning plants in Portage and Windber. Bolstered by “met” – or coking – coal prices that have quadrupled during the past five months, that total will grow to about 150 by the end of this month, Barker said.
“By the end of the year, we’re going to be back up to four shifts at each one of those mines,” Barker said of Mine 78 and the Madison mine.
China, which partially funds its own coal industry, has had the met coal market cornered in recent years. The country has produced stockpiles of the high quality steel-making coal and in the process, kept prices so low that the United States and Australia, its top competitors, have been largely held at bay.
“Now, China is starting to deal with some of the same problems we are here in the states. Their economy is slowing down,” he said, noting that the country has been forced to act more cautiously.

Bechtel to build 1,182-MW Ohio gas plant as fuel mix shifts away from coal (source) Nuclear plants are also being closed because of the cheap price of natural gas.
Paul Lasseter The problem is, the PJM territory is being saturated with gas plants. The profitability of these plants will be marginal. I think they’re counting on putting coal plants out of business and then hoping that gas prices will increase.
Michael Schwiebert On the other hand, the gas plants should have far lower fixed costs (manpower etc.) than a coal plant of the same size, so they’ve got more “room to wiggle” in an regulated price environment. Add to it the scalability and flexibility of a multi-turbine gas plant, gives more options to have output better meet demand.
Paul Lasseter I know all about the fixed costs associated with each plant. I also know about 5 yrs ago when gas prices were high and we would cycle our gas plants offline due to the costs to operate them. When you have to rely on them for a larger demand and can’t do that, the cost of electricity will escalate. I’ve said it before, and I’ll continue to do so. We must have a diverse portfolio of fuels to offset the ebb and flow of any fuel cost.
William Littrell Once the coal fired plants are gone and our exports of Natural Gas have increased, We'll wish we still had coal fired plants, but our culture has been completely brainwashed on Faux green energy so corporate America will cater towards the squeaky wheels.

But the cost is no longer so low. Today, natural gas is cheaper than Appalachian coal (although still higher than some western US coal fields) while renewables such as solar and wind are cheaper than anyone had expected.
"But even as this trend continues, the industry is not going away. Less coal generation in Europe, China, and the US is being offset by increasing consumption in industrializing countries such as Indonesia, Turkey, and India. And the coal plants still left in the US, many in places like Georgia and Indiana, have advantages ranging from a huge scale (a third larger than those shut down this month) to relatively recent design."

Somerset's giant coal-burning power plant will be deactivated within 90 days
The giant coal-burning power plant on the shore of Lake Ontario in Somerset, once Niagara County's largest taxpayer, will be mothballed within 90 days. Plans are already afoot for the 1,800-acre site's future, including a $550 million data center and a lakefront town park. State funding already has been approved for the park, and a New York Power Authority power allocation has been approved for the data center.
Bryan Littrell Somerset Town Supervisor Daniel M. Engert said the state should support the retrofit of the plant, since Cuomo, in his view, bears responsibility for the plant's lack of economic viability.
"He announced his intention to have (the Department of Environmental Conservation) write regulations to make it impossible for a coal plant to operate in New York State, to basically kill coal," Engert said. "We're hoping the governor would step up and support this."
Dennis DeBruler So they are replacing a big power producer with a big power consumer. That is a double-whammy. Microsoft built a data center right next to a ComEd power corridor so that they could directly tap into two high-voltage power lines to provide a redundant supply.
Power is needed not only to run all of the computer, but to run the air conditioning needed to remove the heat generated by those computers. Zoom out and notice all of the HVAC units on the roof.
